Rooted in the Farm: 38 Years of Growing with Nature

A 38-year journey from a small plant nursery to a community food hub—always guided by nature.

It started with plants

Hi, I’m Melanie, the farmer behind Nature’s Touch Nursery & Harvest.

Thirty-eight years ago, my path began as a plant nursery. I was drawn to the quiet intelligence of seeds, roots, herbs, native plants, antique flowers, and the living soil beneath them.

The nursery was never only about selling plants. It was about helping people understand what would grow, why it would grow, and how to work with nature instead of fighting it.

I learned early that nature already has a plan. The seasons, weather, soil temperature, moon cycles, insects, birds, and animals all speak their own language. My job has always been to listen, observe, and respond.

The animals were always part of the farm

Animals have always farmed alongside me. They are not separate from the land—they are part of its healing.

Their grazing, manure, movement, and natural behaviors help feed the soil, build fertility, cycle nutrients, and support a healthier farm ecosystem. When we care for the animals, they help care for the ground that feeds us all.

That relationship taught me that healthy food begins long before harvest. It begins with living soil, clean water, thoughtful animal care, biodiversity, patience, and respect.

The animals have also provided plenty of lessons—and a few laughs. Farming teaches you quickly that animals do not always follow your carefully prepared plans. Sometimes they come up with plans of their own! But even those moments are part of learning how to observe, adapt, and farm in balance with nature.

From growing plants to feeding a community

As the years passed, the nursery grew into something larger.

People needed more than plants. They needed access to real food, trustworthy sources, and someone willing to help explain where their food came from.

I continued growing while building relationships with local farmers, organic growers, ranchers, beekeepers, and food makers who shared the same respect for the land.

Since 2001, our Harvest Basket program has helped connect families with seasonal food from farms in our community and throughout California. Every basket is part of a larger web: growers, animals, soil, weather, harvesters, makers, and neighbors working together.

One person cannot grow, raise, harvest, prepare, and distribute everything a community needs. But when farmers, ranchers, food makers, and customers work together, we can build a stronger and more dependable local food system.

Real food, honestly sourced

Today, Nature’s Touch continues to grow, source, and share fresh produce, local meats, Harvest Baskets, raw honey, handmade farm products, seasonal plants, and other honest foods.

When something is not grown or raised here, I work to find it from people whose practices I can understand and explain.

To me, “local” is more than a label. It is a relationship. It means knowing who grew the food, how the animals were treated, how the soil was cared for, and how each purchase helps keep small farms and food makers alive.

Real food has a story. It comes from soil, water, animals, weather, hard work, and many caring hands. It should nourish people while also supporting the land and communities that make it possible.

Teaching people to grow with nature

Helping people feed themselves has always been an important part of my work.

Through plants, classes, consultations, conversations, and hands-on experience, I help people better understand their soil, local growing conditions, seasonal rhythms, composting, responsible water use, food preservation, and the natural systems already working around them.

Nature is the guide. When we learn to pay attention, it tells us when to plant, when to wait, what the soil needs, and how every part of the farm connects.

Growing food is not just about producing a crop. It is about rebuilding food knowledge and helping people feel confident enough to grow something for themselves.

Feeding people, animals, and the soil

Everything on the farm is connected.

The soil feeds the plants. The plants feed people and animals. The animals return nutrients to the land. Compost and farm materials become food for the soil again. Farmers and ranchers support one another, and customers help keep the entire cycle moving.

That is why feeding a community means more than placing food on a table. It means caring for the system that allows food to exist.

It means supporting healthy soil, responsible animal care, local relationships, seasonal eating, and the people who continue doing this work even when it is difficult.

Still growing, still learning

After 38 years, I am still a student of nature.

Farming keeps you humble. Sometimes the harvest is abundant. Sometimes the weather changes the plan. Sometimes an animal decides it has a much better idea than you do. But every season brings another lesson.

My work continues with the same purpose that started it all: grow what I can, source real food with care, help people feed themselves and their families, care for the animals that care for the soil, and strengthen the community around us.

Nature’s Touch Nursery & Harvest is rooted in the farm, guided by nature, and carried forward by every person who chooses to support real food.

Thank you for growing with us.
